Overview: Kishori Suraksha Yojana launched to improve girl education and empowerment in Uttar Pradesh. In A whopping 28 lakh adolescent girls in UP miss school every month while over 19 lakh eventually leave school at a very early age because of menstruation. The fact was shared by the state health department here on Thursday. To ensure that these girls stay in schools, the state government has joined hands with UNICEF, an international body which looks after education decided to provide free sanitary napkins to all girls studying in government and government-aided schools across the state. They have launched a special scheme KSY for the girl school students.
To bring awareness and stand beside the school girls. The UP government swung into action after several surveys on menstrual hygiene and management brought to the fore an extremely dismal scenario. The scheme, called Kishori Suraksha Yojana, entails providing one pack of 10 sanitary napkins to each girl every month.
All girl developing from a child into an adult in the age group of 11–18 years and belonging to families whose income is below Rs.6400/– per annum in the rural areas will be eligible to receive additional services under the scheme. To promote awareness of health, hygiene, nutrition and family welfare, home management and child care, in families and to take all measure as to facilitate their marrying only after attaining the age of 18 years. Also, efforts have to be made to improve and increase home based skills popular in trades or having capable to do, in the local areas. As no separate budget is available and nutrition is to be provided from the State Sector for gilrs.
